Biography:

CPT Tonya Sottilo is from San Antonio, Texas. She commissioned as a Military Intelligence officer from the University of Texas Army ROTC program in 2008. After BOLC II at Fort Benning Georgia and BOLC III at Fort Huachuca, AZ, Captain Sottilo was assigned to 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood and deployed in 2009 as the Squadron Assistant S2 in 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment at Joint Security Station Istiqla’al, Iraq.  Upon redeploying, she served as a Platoon Leader in 1 BCT, 1CD, first for the all-source intelligence Platoon then for the signals intelligence Platoon. Captain Sottilo deployed to Contingency Operating Station Kalsu, Iraq in 2011 as the Brigade Assistant S2 during the culmination of the US military’s mission in Iraq. When the Brigade successfully closed all American bases in their area of operations, they continued their mission at Camp Buehring, Kuwait in 2012. Following the Military Intelligence Captain’s Career Course at Fort Huachuca, Captain Sottilo served in the 297th Military Intelligence Battalion as Assistant Battalion S3 at Ft Gordon, GA. She then formed a cyber operations Company in 782D Military Intelligence Battalion (Cyber) at Fort Gordon as the Company Commander and, later, as a Mission Commander on a Cyber Combat Mission Team. Captain Sottilo currently resides in Sacramento with her canine companion, Livy. 

Military and Civilian Education:

Captain Sottilo earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistics from the University of Texas in Austin, Texas and is currently pursuing additional degrees from the University of Louisville in Organizational Leadership and Learning and from Utah State University in Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education. She is a graduate of the Military Intelligence Basic Officer Leader Course, Military Intelligence Captain’s Career Course, Airborne School, and the Mission Commander Course.

Captain Sottilo’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with two Campaign Stars, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon with (2) device, and the Basic Parachutist Badge.
